10 Ways to Have Fun with Boobs
Boob products?! Yes, this is an article about fun boob gadgets and products. If you are too young or too prudish to handle this, go and read something else. Love boobs? I certainly do. Love them. Love them. Love them. If I could, I would spend all of my days lounging around under a palm tree, eating fried chicken breasts and playing with boobs. Sadly, life is not like that. It's hard for a man to spend his whole day surrounded by boobs... since by boobs, I don't mean the idiots I work and live with. So, to make life more enjoyable for my fellow men, I came up with the brilliant idea of finding the way that a man could play with breasts all day long and still get stuff done. So here are my picks for the 10 Fun Ways to Play with Boobs: 10. Shuffle Around the House with the Boob Slippers Merchant for these Booby Slippers says:
"These Boob Slippers are the perfect gift for someone who needs pampering, even yourself! Made from 100% polyester they are very comfortable and definitely the softest boobs I have ever felt! Wrist injury can be prevented or reduced by utilizing a properly designed ergonomic mouse pad. [With the chest rest,] wrist is supported by the valley in between the two gelatin mounds. (Buy Boob Product via Amused) 7. Click Away with the Boob Mouse I don't know what the merchant is saying since I can't read Japanese. But according to Gizmodo: "Now not only can you have a Busty Mousepad, you can have a busty mouse to go along with it. The mouse has two buttons and a scrollwheel—which part of a woman's anatomy is that—and costs only $4.99 (1000 Yen). Though, the breasts look more like eyeballs than breasts, so it's not that erotic. Duct Tape Risk Communication by Peter M. Sandman and Jody Lanard We don’t know any more than anyone else about the pros and cons of sealing one’s windows with duct tape. We assume that there are moments – when terrorists are using the right agent and are located the right distance from you – when it’s exactly the right thing to do. We assume most of the time it doesn’t do much good – except perhaps for making you feel like you’re taking some action, and thus diminishing the inclination to run out into the street or drive off into a traffic jam, which is quite likely to be the wrong thing to do. We can’t see it doing much harm. But we will defer to others on what sorts of tape and what sorts of plastic sheeting are best for what sorts of bioweapons. What’s interesting to us is the extraordinary public and media response to the government’s suggestion last week that it might be a good idea to stock up on duct tape and plastic sheeting – along with a few days worth of food and water and other provisions for sheltering in place. Actually, three responses are interesting: - The mocking response. “Duct tape is useless, and the suggestion is hilarious. This is a stunning example of how laughably inept the government’s counterterrorism policy really is. Why don’t they just shut up?”
- The fearful/dependent response. “Duct tape is useless, and the suggestion is inadequate. This is a stunning example of how woefully insufficient the government’s counterterrorism policy really is. Why don’t they recommend something stronger, and do something stronger?”
- The numb/counter-dependent response. “Duct tape is useless, and the suggestion is unnecessary. This is a stunning example of how inappropriately terrifying the government’s counterterrorism policy really is. Why don’t they stop alarming people and provide reassurance instead?”
Two other, more cognitive responses are not the main subject of this column. The political response: “Don’t be fooled. These recommendations are the Republicans’ way of avoiding the need for huge budget increases for counterterrorism planning.” And the skeptical/distrustful response: “This is just another example of the government scaring us to drum up support for whittling away our civil rights and going to war.” Note that all the above responses were quite frequently combined with cooperative, even diligent, behavior: “It sounds pretty silly/inadequate/scary/duplicitous, but I’ll stop anyhow for duct tape on my way to the supermarket, where I’ll pick up more batteries and a few gallons of water. I still have some in the basement from Y2K, but they’re pretty old.” Many thousands of people calmly lined up to buy counterterrorism supplies without stepping on anyone’s grandmother. There was no panic. But there was contempt, which presumably diminished the number of people who complied, not to mention the enthusiasm with which they did so. What’s going on here? Why has there been nearly universal disdain for the Department of Homeland Security’s shelter-in-place recommendations? Why are these recommendations seen alternately as a patronizing effort to reassure us with pabulum or as a disingenuous effort to scare us into support for war? Why has the effort to color-code levels of alert met with similar contempt? Why has the combination of these warnings with advice to continue our ordinary lives – go to work, go have fun, go shopping – struck most observers as inconsistent at best, macabre at worst? And, most important, what should the government do about it? In this column we want to explore the reasons why people are responding so weirdly to recommended counterterrorism precautions. Then we want to offer some advice on how to make these precautions easier to take. Why is the public response so weird? The essence of the government’s advice is to be vigilant; to take those precautions that are prudent (not too expensive or too disruptive); and to go about our business. This “routinization of terror” is almost undoubtedly the right long-term response to the new reality in which we find ourselves: neither pretending that the terrorist threat isn’t there nor allowing the terrorist threat to dominate our lives. It is what Israel, Northern Ireland, and other countries have learned to do. It is what residents of U.S. inner cities threatened by gangs and drug dealers have learned to do. It is what the rest of us must now learn to do. So why do we rebel? Among the answers: - Hopelessness (“My world is ruined and I can’t imagine it getting better.”)
- Denial (“I don’t want to think about it.”)
- Projection (“In the face of this threat I feel helpless and small and inept and stupid. But those feelings are unbearable, so I’ll accuse the government of being helpless and small and inept and stupid.”)
- Fatalism (“Nothing will help. What will be will be.”)
- Distrust of the government. (“They lie. They exaggerate. They minimize. They don’t really know anything. They have ulterior motives.”)
- Failure of imagination (“How can I possibly have anything to contribute to such a huge problem?”)
Finally and most important, the rebellion demonstrates an infantile yearning to be allowed to stay passive while the government takes care of us all. Somehow a measured response to the threat of terrorism seems wrong. We want less or more; we want the government to assure us that it’s not a problem or pull out all the stops to solve the problem for us. Nothing in the middle satisfies. Make it go away! On the most overarching level, most of us are raging, outwardly or inwardly, about the way our world has changed, and the unlikelihood that it will ever change back. Until 9/11 we didn’t even have the phrase “homeland security”; we just had homeland security, or thought we did, without thinking about it. For years we either mocked or supported the increasing numbers of gated communities in the U.S., never quite noticing that we lived in the largest gated community in the history of the world. And if we did notice, we thought the weakest part of the fence was the southern border. Now we learn there is no fence. Many of us, those who were paying attention, were horrified in 1989 when Iranian cleric Ayatollah Khomeini issued a death sentence on Salman Rushdie. Now there is a death sentence on us. We are paying attention, and we can hardly believe it. Telling us to buy duct tape to keep the enemy out throws all this in our face. The very phrase “Homeland Security” throws all this in our face. It’s hard to bear. We need to bear it, and we need help bearing it. The comparison to 1950s duck-and-cover drills is a frequent and illuminating one. Faced with the possibility of atomic attack, the government of the fifties tried to offer us things to do to protect ourselves. Some of what was recommended may have been futile – but our desire to judge it all to be futile, whether it was or not, was rooted in the same list of paralyzing emotional responses. If the Bomb fell, we told ourselves, there was nothing to do but bend over and kiss your ass goodbye. This may have been close to accurate for those located very near Ground Zero – which is where we all imagined ourselves to be located. Further away, duck-and-cover was a pretty decent way to avoid being blinded by the fireball. Further away, fallout shelters would have, well, sheltered us from fallout. We didn’t want to hear it. A nuclear attack, we insisted, would kill everyone. Precautions were futile. Those who said otherwise were traitors to the essential task of making sure that nuclear war remained unthinkable. Decades later, anti-nuclear power activists in New England tried to raise public fear and outrage with a billboard near the Seabrook nuclear plant stating: “No evacuation possible.” Friends visiting from Florida looked bewildered at that billboard. Everyone in southern Florida knows about hurricane evacuation routes; they’re posted on street signs. They don’t guarantee that everyone will get out in time, but planning certainly improves the odds. The comparison to hurricanes and other natural disasters is actually more apt than the comparison to nuclear war or nuclear power. When the Federal Emergency Management Agency urges precautions against natural disasters – including taping your windows – it is fighting an uphill battle against apathy. No one accuses FEMA of ulterior motives; no one accuses FEMA of false reassurance or of panicking the public. No one accuses FEMA of anything in advance of a disaster; no one is even paying attention until after the disaster, when everyone accuses FEMA of not doing enough. But switch from natural disasters to terrorism, and from FEMA to Homeland Security, and the reaction changes. Homeland Security is fighting an uphill battle not against apathy but against outrage, fear, and denial. Homeland Security is accused of insulting our intelligence. It is accused of fostering a false sense of security, or of fostering a false sense of danger, or both at the same time! If you are some distance away from an explosion, your main initial risk is flying glass and debris; going to an interior hallway, away from windows, is a no-brainer. Ask folks who survived Hurricane Andrew, or who live in Tornado Alley. We recall lots of industrial accidents where people beyond the immediate evacuation zones were advised to stay inside and close their windows. Millions “sheltered in place” during a three-day ice storm in New England. We now live in Mercer County, New Jersey; most of our neighbors remember the advantage of having bottled water on hand during and after Hurricane Floyd, when the water company’s water was temporarily contaminated. Being prepared to cope on your own isn’t just a way of helping yourself. It is also a way of freeing emergency responders to focus where they need to focus. Households that can be self-sufficient in the aftermath of an attack (better yet, households that can help their neighbors) won’t drain desperately needed resources. Sure, you might take the wrong precautions. There is room for debate over what precautions make the most sense. Maybe duct tape doesn’t belong on the list – though food, water, medicine, flashlights, batteries, and candles certainly do. But that’s not the point. The point is that the government is right to be suggesting precautions for us to take. When we ridicule those precautions, our reaction reveals more about our state of mind than it does about the wisdom of the precautions. But it also says something about the government’s skill in anticipating and addressing our state of mind – which raises this column’s second question. What should the government do? The single most important thing the government should do, we think, is to ask more of people. Duct tape and the rest should be part of the agenda for a terrorism-alert populace. But only part. For reasons both practical and psychological, the government should expect more. In 1939, with Germany threatening to invade Great Britain, the Ministry of Home Security put up posters headlined, “If the Invader comes – what to do and how to do it.” The posters asserted that “the invaders will be driven out by our Navy, our Army, and our Air Force,” but also insisted that “the ordinary men and women of the civilian population will also have their part to play.” Instructions included strong directives for civilians: “In factories and shops, all managers and workmen should organise some system now by which a sudden attack can be resisted.” The government expected a lot of people. Last week, although our government asked us to do some preparation, George Bush said, “We’re trying to protect you. We’re doing everything in our power to make sure the homeland is secure.” He’d better be. But he also should demand much more of us. It’s frightening to some, contemptible to others, to be asked to do so little. It seems worse than nothing. Shelter-in-place preparedness has a long and honorable track record – but it’s not enough. Self-reliant emergency preparedness is not unique to terrorism. In Los Angeles, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) helps citizens prepare for emergency and disaster situations where they may initially be on their own and their actions can make a difference. In the land of earthquakes, this is not considered alarmist or patronizing or over-reassuring. CERT’s web site has question-and-answer sheets about how many drops of what kind of bleach to use to maintain stored water; where to get goggles, dust masks, gloves, and helmets; how to check your gas valve – page after page of detailed, useful information. Over 40 states and six countries are now using CERT training materials. This “positive and realistic approach,” as CERT calls it, is hopeful and heartening, and a model for people who want to be part of disaster preparedness. Tom Ridge is right to tell us to store three days of food and water, but he should also advise us about information sources like CERT, so we can learn more, and do more, to protect ourselves. We need detailed recommendations, especially about ways to prepare on the local level: learning where your town’s shelters and emergency distribution centers are; making a list of elderly and handicapped neighbors who may need help preparing now and help coping if a crisis arises; participating in or at least knowing about your town’s (or your neighborhood’s) emergency planning efforts. Nor does self-reliance have to mean every household for itself. There are spectacular examples of very local community organizing that energizes communities, stiffens the spines of the fearful, lifts the spirits of the numb, activates the stunned – and actually takes care of the neighborhood during a disaster. In the Independence Plaza apartment complex near Ground Zero in New York City, tenant Diane Lapson led her well-organized tenants’ association in making sure elderly residents had medicine; cooking food for rescue workers and housebound tenants; setting up a crisis drop-in center; and even obtaining pet food for stranded dogs and cats. The Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies has studied civic and volunteer responses to terrorism, and concluded that the government needs to recruit and harness our strong desire to help, rather than giving us minimal and vague instructions that leave many people feeling helpless. Will everyone want to do all this? Absolutely not. Advice about precaution-taking should almost always come on three levels: a minimum level that you think people ought to do even if they consider the risk negligible; a higher level that you think is worth the extra effort and therefore recommend; and a still higher level for those who feel especially alarmed, especially vulnerable, or especially interested in getting involved. Last week’s recommendations were a good minimum (with or without the duct tape). Now where are the two higher levels of precaution? Asking more of people is largely about asking them to implement appropriate precautions. But that’s not all it’s about. It also means asking them to bear the misery, uncertainty, fear, and anger that the new reality necessarily provokes. Most people can bear it. Some cannot. Those who are most deeply in denial may need to be allowed to stay there, until they feel ready to face up to what has happened and what may happen. Those who are experiencing ungovernable and intolerable emotions may need professional help. But what most of us need is gentle prodding from a government that believes we can bear it and wants us to try. Some other things we think the government should do: - Acknowledge the public’s misery.
Misery is often ignored or lumped in with fear, contempt, and denial. It is by far the most common response to post-9/11 reality, and by far the biggest reason why people have trouble taking that reality seriously. We need help accepting, and acting upon, the sadder world we now inhabit. - Express empathic wishes.
“I wish this didn’t even need to be planned for.” “I wish we had more answers.” “We all wish we were back in that pre-9/11 world.” Even angry wishes can be empathic if they are said with a sense of irony: “I wish people would stop laughing at me and just buy the damned duct tape.” - Mention the unmentionable.
The real possibility, even inevitability, of further attacks has been mentioned. It needs to be mentioned more. And more. And still more. This, too, can be done empathically. The single best thing we have heard Tom Ridge say was his response to the over-reaction of a few people who started sealing their homes: “God forbid there may come a time when the local authorities or national authorities or someone will tell you that you’ve got to use [the duct tape].” - Share the dilemma.
Acknowledge that it isn’t easy to come up with appropriate precautions for people to take against terrorism. Ask the public for ideas, and set up a mechanism for receiving, assessing, and publicizing their suggestions. Concede that people often wish the government had all the answers, that you often wish the same – but it doesn’t. - Explain that you know some of the information you give people isn’t really useful.
This is less about duct tape than those color-coded alert levels, and the periodic warnings that “somethin’s comin’ ” but you don’t know when or where or what. Yes, it’s partly CYA, and you can say that. But it’s more than CYA. Though people may be angry when given vague information they can’t really use, they are far angrier when kept in the dark on the grounds that they have no real use for the information. We have a right to know what’s going on, and we need to get used to this new reality. So you’ve decided on a policy of telling unless there’s a strong reason not to tell – instead of the outmoded policy of not telling unless there’s a strong reason to tell. - Acknowledge that some recommendations sound a bit lame.
It was predictable that Homeland Security’s duct tape would end up on Letterman and Leno. That isn’t necessarily a reason not to make the recommendation. But it is a reason to admit at the outset that it may sound laughable, and to explain why you think it makes sense anyway. - Take the derision in stride.
At best, the near-universal mockery is part of an adjustment. Humor may be our way of letting the new reality in, a little at a time. It defuses tension while safely expressing, in projected form, our rage and our anxiety. Of course if humor replaces action, that’s a problem. But if humor facilitates action, by energizing us and prompting new ideas after we finish mocking the old ones, we’re coping. Our mockery is partly self-mockery projected onto the government – and we know it. - Take disapproval and disagreement in stride too.
Humor aside, there are bound to be people who think the government’s approach to homeland security is wrong, even profoundly wrong. Some will think the government is over-reacting; some will think it is under-reacting; some will think it’s just pursuing the wrong priorities. Counterterrorism is more art than science. There is plenty of expert disagreement. Let it show – even showcase it as an example of how democracies face difficult problems: openly. - Tell stories.
Probably the most useful stories are the inspirational ones, stories about people overcoming fear or denial or lethargy, preparing themselves and helping prepare their communities. (Diane Lapson told her story at a recent conference sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense, and got more sustained applause than any expert all day.) But virtually any relevant story will help. If Laura Bush told Tom Ridge a good duct tape joke, now’s the time for him to retell it. - Address the full range of audiences.
Homeland Security seems not to have considered the different target audiences that make up its stakeholders; it addresses the public as a whole without empathically supporting the fearful and the numb, without acknowledging the skeptical, without engaging and allying with the mocking. If Homeland Security did all this, it would earn the right to gently admonish the over-dependent: “We can’t do it all. We need you to do your part. There are lots of rungs on the ladder between you at home and us here in Washington. Go find out what your town is planning; check out your local emergency preparedness web sites. Make a list of your elderly neighbors and make sure they have a few days worth of food and water.” - Anticipate mistakes and failures.
They’re going to occur, and some of them will be devastating. Whatever precautions we take, things can happen for which they will have been the wrong precautions. Keep reminding us that we are working for a “safer” homeland, not a “safe” homeland; the latter is not and never was within our grasp. Remind us also that how we prepare and how we respond will in part determine how bad the disaster will be. - Fight hard for the “middle” approach to terrorism.
It’s going to be a long haul. We all keep saying that, but we haven’t yet adjusted to it. We need precautions that we can integrate into our lives – and still live the sorts of lives we want to live. The view that we must sacrifice everything we hold dear (from civil liberties to shopping malls) in order to stop terrorism is not acceptable. Neither is the view that we must keep everything just as it was, and leave ourselves just as vulnerable as we were. Life has changed and life goes on.

Equation E*qua"tion\, n. [L. aequatio an equalizing: cf. F. ['e]quation equation. See Equate.]1. A making equal; equal division; equality; equilibrium. Again the golden day resumed its right, And ruled in just equation with the night. --Rowe. 2. (Math.) An expression of the condition of equality between two algebraic quantities or sets of quantities, the sign = being placed between them; as, a binomial equation; a quadratic equation; an algebraic equation; a transcendental equation; an exponential equation; a logarithmic equation; a differential equation, etc. 3. (Astron.) A quantity to be applied in computing the mean place or other element of a celestial body; that is, any one of the several quantities to be added to, or taken from, its position as calculated on the hypothesis of a mean uniform motion, in order to find its true position as resulting from its actual and unequal motion. Absolute equation. See under Absolute. Equation box, or Equational box, a system of differential gearing used in spinning machines for regulating the twist of the yarn. It resembles gearing used in equation clocks for showing apparent time. Equation of the center (Astron.), the difference between the place of a planet as supposed to move uniformly in a circle, and its place as moving in an ellipse. Equations of condition (Math.), equations formed for deducing the true values of certain quantities from others on which they depend, when different sets of the latter, as given by observation, would yield different values of the quantities sought, and the number of equations that may be found is greater than the number of unknown quantities. Equation of a curve (Math.), an equation which expresses the relation between the co["o]rdinates of every point in the curve. Equation of equinoxes (Astron.), the difference between the mean and apparent places of the equinox. Equation of payments (Arith.), the process of finding the mean time of payment of several sums due at different times. Equation of time (Astron.), the difference between mean and apparent time, or between the time of day indicated by the sun, and that by a perfect clock going uniformly all the year round. Equation clock or watch, a timepiece made to exhibit the differences between mean solar and apparent solar time. --Knight. Normal equation. See under Normal. Personal equation (Astron.), the difference between an observed result and the true qualities or peculiarities in the observer; particularly the difference, in an average of a large number of observation, between the instant when an observer notes a phenomenon, as the transit of a star, and the assumed instant of its actual occurrence; or, relatively, the difference between these instants as noted by two observers. It is usually only a fraction of a second; -- sometimes applied loosely to differences of judgment or method occasioned by temperamental qualities of individuals. Theory of equations (Math.), the branch of algebra that treats of the properties of a single algebraic equation of any degree containing one unknown quantity.
Quick-Start Guide When you enter an equation into the calculator, the calculator will begin by expanding (simplifying) the problem. Then it will attempt to solve the equation by using one or more of the following: addition, subtraction, division, taking the square root of each side, factoring, and completing the square. Variables Any lowercase letter may be used as a variable. Exponents Exponents are supported on variables using the ^ (caret) symbol. For example, to express x2, enter x^2. Note: exponents must be positive integers, no negatives, decimals, or variables. Exponents may not currently be placed on numbers, brackets, or parentheses. Parentheses and Brackets Parentheses ( ) and brackets [ ] may be used to group terms as in a standard equation or expression. Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction For addition and subtraction, use the standard + and - symbols respectively. For multiplication, use the * symbol. A * symbol is not necessiary when multiplying a number by a variable. For instance: 2 * x can also be entered as 2x. Similarly, 2 * (x + 5) can also be entered as 2(x + 5); 2x * (5) can be entered as 2x(5). The * is also optional when multiplying with parentheses, example: (x + 1)(x - 1). Order of Operations The calculator follows the standard order of operations taught by most algebra books - Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction. The only exception is that division is not currently supported; attempts to use the / symbol will result in an error. Division, Square Root, Radicals, Fractions The above features are not supported at this time. A future release will add this functionality.

| fatigue |
| Monday, February 23, 2009 |
The tragedies of Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and the Exxon Valdez all occurred during the night shift. Fatigue is a critical occupational safety concern for shift workers, especially workers in the transportation industry. Off the job, being overtired creates a risk for anyone who undertakes an activity that requires concentration and quick response -- from driving, to home repair, to skiing. And exhaustion is one of the most common health complaints for Canadian workers, especially women. How sleep affects safety Irregular working hours, monotonous work, long shifts, vibrations and drugs increase drowsiness and reduce alertness. The costs are devastating in human terms, and the economic consequences are enormous. Worldwide, the National Institute for Working Life, a Swedish organization, estimates that sleep-deprived workers cost $350 billion US per year. Sleep is as basic to survival as food and water. Losing as little as two hours of sleep can negatively affect alertness and performance. Sleep deprivation affects a person's carefulness and ability to respond to an emergency. Symptoms can include: decreased judgement, decision-making and memory; slower reaction time; lack of concentration; fixation; and worsened mood. Studies monitoring brain activity show that one shift worker in five dozes off during the shift. Often, they do not realize afterwards that they have done so. Drowsy drivers, according to sleep researchers, may cause as many crashes as impaired drivers. Regardless of motivation, professionalism, training or pay, an individual who is very sleepy can lapse into sleep at any time, despite the potential consequences of inattention. The circadian clock The body's processes have peaks and low points during every 24-hour period. These are called circadian rhythms. Time cues -- such as sunlight and work/rest schedules keep the circadian clock "set." Crossing time zones or changing from a day shift to a night shift forces the circadian clock to move to a different schedule. Time is required to adjust to the new schedule. During the transition, symptoms similar to sleep loss can occur. Disruption of the circadian rhythm when combined with loss of sleep can create a dangerous increase in fatigue. Factors in the work environment The environment and nature of the work can further magnify the effects of sleep debt and circadian rhythms. Environments with dim lighting, limited visual acuity (e.g. due to weather), high temperatures, high noise and high comfort tend to enhance fatigue. Also, a worker's susceptibility to fatigue is increased by tasks where attention must be sustained for long period, and those which are long, repetitive, paced, difficult, boring and monotonous. How to fight fatigue Despite the fact that working nights and early mornings does not promote good health, shift work is a necessary part of today's work environment. Expensive machinery has to operate to its capacity. Goods have to arrive "just in time." Patients in hospitals need care around the clock. Lifestyle, operations and physiological disorders are key components in the fight against fatigue. Workers can reduce fatigue through proper nutrition, stress control and exercise. A healthy diet provides longer-lasting energy -- concentrate on complex carbohydrates (starch) rather than simple carbohydrates (sugar); and avoid fatty foods and junk food. Don't let negative circumstances get the better of you. And regular exercise is important -- cardiovascular, muscle strengthening and flexibility. Employers can avoid placing workers in jeopardy by analysing working conditions, addressing operational safety disincentives and conducting sleep-safety training. Shorter shifts and work rotation schedules that go in the direction of the sun (morning, afternoon, night) have been found to reduce the negative effects. Any worker with a specific sleep disorder should seek help. For example, 78 per cent of long-haul truckers suffer from sleep apnea, which can be treated. Labels: fatigue Read more! |

Ketones and Ketoacidosis When you are ill, have an infection or your sugars have been high for any reason for a long period, you need to look out for a very dangerous condition: Ketoacidosis. But what is it? Let's go back a step. Some things called Ketones are produced when the body is burning fat to get energy. This happens naturally, of course, if we are exercising to lose weight. However, if it happens too much too fast, it is not natural. Moderate or large amounts of ketones in your body are very dangerous. They upset the chemical balance of the blood. Ketones in the blood can lead to a condition called Ketoacidosis, also known as DKA, which just stands for diabetic ketoacidosis. DKA involves having to go to hospital to be rehydrated and monitored while theketones in your body reduce to a safe level. Many people with Type 1 diabetes have never in 20 or more years had an episode of ketoacidosis. But you may already know what it is, as it can happen when people's Type 1 diabetes is undiagnosed and you might have been unlucky enough to have had it already. Unfortunately, DKA is life threatening, so you need to understand what it is and what to look out for. What causes ketones and DKA? What should you look out for? 1. Not getting enough insulin. Maybe you forgot or made a mistake with your insulin doses. Or your body is fighting an infection, a flu or another illness, so needs more insulin than usual. If there is not enough insulin available, your body cannot access sugars in your blood for energy, so your body begins to break down body fat for the energy it needs to function. 2. Not enough food. When people are sick, they often do not feel like eating. Again your body needs energy and because there is no other food for it to break down, it starts breaking down body fat. Ketones are produced from this process. The same may happen if a person who is not ill simply does not eat, for example, they simply skip a meal, or if they have an eating disorder. 3. Hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose). When blood glucose levels fall too low, the body must use fat to get energy. If testing shows high ketones in the morning, you may have had a hypo while asleep. 4. Changes during pregnancy. Women with Type 1 diabetes who are pregnant are at high risk of producing ketones. The rapid changes in your body during pregnancy and changing insulin needs can mean that your body is not getting enough insulin or food. As explained in Points 1 and 2, both of these scenarios can lead to ketones. Ketones are NOT an infection. An infection can give you ketones, as explained at point 1 above, but ketones are not a type of infection. Antibiotics will not fix ketones. Ketones and DKA are NOT related to kidney function. The small particles that blood tests look for when someone's kidneys aren't filtering properly are called microalbiminuria. The presence or absence of ketones in your urine does not indicate anything about your kidney function. The two things are entirely different. Do I have ketoacidosis/DKA? When ketones are moderate or high and the chemical balance of your blood is upset, you will know about it! The symptoms of ketoacidosis include nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Some people also experience fast and heavy beating of their heart. It is scary. You are clearly unwell. And you should speak to your doctor or go to hospital immediately. Catch it early. Stay out of hospital. Ketones can be tested at home with a simple blood or urine test. Urine tests are done with testing strips available from your chemist or your NDSS outlet, the same way you buy blood testing strips. You pee on the strip, wait as indicated, and check the colour against a chart on the container. This is cheap and easy, but is not very accurate and only shows the ketones that were in your body 2-4 hours earlier. Blood testing of ketones has recently become available. The Optium and Optium Xceed blood glucose monitors are the only meters which allows this function (as well as doing regular blood glucose testing). You will need different testing strips to your normal ones for blood tests, but otherwise, it is quite simple to use the Optium monitors. You should test for ketones when: - You are ill
- You are under stress
- Your blood glucose levels are consistently high eg. above 16.7 mmol/L.
I have ketones. What do I do now? | Ketone test result | Action required | | Blood test: Less than 0.6 mmol/l Urine test: Low or Trace | - This is the normal, low level.
- No action is required.
| | Blood test: 0.6 - 1.5 mmol/l Urine test: Moderate | - This indicates the beginning of a problem.
- Your endocrinologist or diabetes educator will have provided you with instructions to follow if you are showing ketones - do this now.
- Their instructions may have included regular (half-hourly) monitoring of blood glucose, increasing or adding insulin doses carefully until your blood sugar levels drop. Also drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
| | Blood test: More than 1.5 mmol/l Urine test: High | - You may be at risk of DKA.
- Call diabetes team immediately for advice.
- If you cannot contact your diabetes team, call your nearest big public hospital and ask to speak to the endocrinologist, diabetes nurse or registrar on call.
- If this still fails, you need to go to the emergency unit of your nearest hospital.
| Download as a Fact Sheet Pet Health: Ketones, Ketoacidosis and Diabetic CatsWhat are Ketones? Ketones or ketone bodies (acetone, acetoacetic acid, and beta-hydroxybutyric acid) are waste products of fatty acid breakdown in the body. This is the result of burning fat, rather than glucose, to fuel the body. The body tries to dispose of excess ketones as quickly as possible when they are present in the blood. The kidneys filter out ketones and excrete them into the urine. Should you care about ketones? YES! If they build up, they can lead to very serious energy problems in the body, resulting in diabetic ketoacidosis, a true medical emergency. If the condition is not reversed and other systemic stresses are present, ketones may continue to rise and a condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) may occur. This condition can progress very quickly and cause severe illness. It is potentially fatal even when treated. Recognition of DKA and rapid treatment by your veterinarian can save your cat's life. Signs of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) - Drinking excessive amounts of water OR no water
- Excessive urination
- Diminished activity
- Not eating for over 12 hours
- Vomiting
- Lethargy and depression
- Weakness
- Breathing very fast
- Dehydration
- Ketone odor on breath (smells like nail-polish remover or fruit)
Causes of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) - Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
- Inadequate insulin dosing or production
- Infection
- Concurrent diseas that stresses the animal
- Estrus
- Medication noncompliance
- Lethargy and depression
- Stress
- Surgery
- Idiopathic (unknown causes)
Risk Factors for DKA - Any condition that causes an insulin deficiency
- History of corticosteroid or beta-blocker administration
Diagnosis Laboratory tests performed by your vet are necessary for diagnosis. Depending on how sick your cat is, the testing can be extensive (and expensive). Your veterinarian will determine what tests are necessary. At a minimum, testing is likely to include a number of blood tests and a urine test. Treatment If the cat is bright, alert, and well-hydrated, the cat will not require intensive care. Your cat will require insulin, food, constant access to water, and close monitoring for signs of illness such as vomiting, anorexia, and lethargy. Treatment of cats who show signs illness require inpatient intensive care. The goal of treatment is to correct dehydration, electrolyte depletion, to reverse the high ketones in the blood and the metabolic acidosis that is present, and to increase the rate of glucose use by insulin-dependent tissues. Veterinary care for DKA involves intravenous (IV) fluids, usually supplemented with potassium, monitoring by observation and urine and blood tests, and sometimes feeding by a tube. Treatment may involve a hospital stay of five days or more and often costs about US$2000. Without treatment, "sick" animals with DKA will die. Testing for Ketones Simple urine tests can detect ketones. This is done by collecting a urine sample and inserting a special dip stick into the urine. Some urine ketone strips detect only ketones while other types test for both glucose and ketone levels. Urine ketone strips will detect only some of the ketone bodies produced by the body, not all of them. Strip storage, handling, and testing procedures are similar to those used for glucose test strips. Strip test results are indicated by presence of color changes, indicating presence of ketones, either quantitatively (giving you a number for the ketone concentration) or by descriptive terms (for example, negative, trace, small, or large). False positives may occur if you are also using certain medications or vitamins, or if the strips have been handled or stored improperly. If you wish to test blood instead of urine for ketones, there is a meter that allows for home testing, the Abbott Precision Xtra meter. Outside of the US, the meter is known by the brand name Precision/Optimum/Xceed. The premise behind blood testing for ketones is the same as that for favoring glucose testing of blood over urine. The Precision Xtra meter is offered by Hock's online pharmacy for US$29.95 in October 2006. The ketone test strips are about US$30 for a box of 50. The Precision Xtra also does blood glucose testing with standard blood glucose test strips made for use with the meter. When to call the vet In a diabetic, any urinary ketones above trace or trace urinary ketones plus some of the signs listed above, are cause to call a veterinarian immediately. If your vet doesn't offer after-hour emergency care, be sure to have the number and location of a 24 hour emergency veterinarian.

The Golgi Apparatus The Golgi apparatus (GA), also called Golgi body or Golgi complex and found universally in both plant and animal cells, is typically comprised of a series of five to eight cup-shaped, membrane-covered sacs called cisternae that look something like a stack of deflated balloons. In some unicellular flagellates, however, as many as 60 cisternae may combine to make up the Golgi apparatus. Similarly, the number of Golgi bodies in a cell varies according to its function. Animal cells generally contain between ten and twenty Golgi stacks per cell, which are linked into a single complex by tubular connections between cisternae. This complex is usually located close to the cell nucleus. Due to its relatively large size, the Golgi apparatus was one of the first organelles ever observed. In 1897, an Italian physician named Camillo Golgi, who was investigating the nervous system by using a new staining technique he developed (and which is still sometimes used today; known as Golgi staining or Golgi impregnation), observed in a sample under his light microscope a cellular structure that he termed the internal reticular apparatus. Soon after he publicly announced his discovery in 1898, the structure was named after him, becoming universally known as the Golgi apparatus. Yet, many scientists did not believe that what Golgi observed was a real organelle present in the cell and instead argued that the apparent body was a visual distortion caused by staining. The invention of the electron microscope in the twentieth century finally confirmed that the Golgi apparatus is a cellular organelle. The Golgi apparatus is often considered the distribution and shipping department for the cell's chemical products. It modifies proteins and lipids (fats) that have been built in the endoplasmic reticulum and prepares them for export outside of the cell or for transport to other locations in the cell. Proteins and lipids built in the smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum bud off in tiny bubble-like vesicles that move through the cytoplasm until they reach the Golgi complex. The vesicles fuse with the Golgi membranes and release their internally stored molecules into the organelle. Once inside, the compounds are further processed by the Golgi apparatus, which adds molecules or chops tiny pieces off the ends. When completed, the product is extruded from the GA in a vesicle and directed to its final destination inside or outside the cell. The exported products are secretions of proteins or glycoproteins that are part of the cell's function in the organism. Other products are returned to the endoplasmic reticulum or may undergo maturation to become lysosomes. The modifications to molecules that take place in the Golgi apparatus occur in an orderly fashion. Each Golgi stack has two distinct ends, or faces. The cis face of a Golgi stack is the end of the organelle where substances enter from the endoplasmic reticulum for processing, while the trans face is where they exit in the form of smaller detached vesicles. Consequently, the cis face is found near the endoplasmic reticulum, from whence most of the material it receives comes, and the trans face is positioned near the plasma membrane of the cell, to where many of the substances it modifies are shipped. The chemical make-up of each face is different and the enzymes contained in the lumens (inner open spaces) of the cisternae between the faces are distinctive. Illustrated in Figure 2 is a fluorescence digital image taken through a microscope of the Golgi apparatus (pseudocolored red) in a typical animal cell. Note the close proximity of the Golgi membranes to the cell nucleus. Proteins, carbohydrates, phospholipids, and other molecules formed in the endoplasmic reticulum are transported to the Golgi apparatus to be biochemically modified during their transition from the cis to the trans poles of the complex. Enzymes present in the Golgi lumen modify the carbohydrate (or sugar) portion of glycoproteins by adding or subtracting individual sugar monomers. In addition, the Golgi apparatus manufactures a variety of macromolecules on its own, including a variety of polysaccharides. The Golgi complex in plant cells produces pectins and other polysaccharides specifically needed by for plant structure and metabolism. The products exported by the Golgi apparatus through the trans face eventually fuse with the plasma membrane of the cell. Among the most important duties of the Golgi apparatus is to sort the wide variety of macromolecules produced by the cell and target them for distribution to their proper location. Specialized molecular identification labels or tags, such as phosphate groups, are added by the Golgi enzymes to aid in this sorting effort. source: micro.magnet.fsu.edu, golgiapparatus. Simple Linear Regression
Linear regression attempts to model the relationship between two variables by fitting a linear equation to observed data. One variable is considered to be an explanatory variable, and the other is considered to be a dependent variable. For example, a modeler might want to relate the weights of individuals to their heights using a linear regression model. Before attempting to fit a linear model to observed data, a modeler should first determine whether or not there is a relationship between the variables of interest. This does not necessarily imply that one variable causes the other (for example, higher SAT scores do not cause higher college grades), but that there is some significant association between the two variables. A scatterplot can be a helpful tool in determining the strength of the relationship between two variables. If there appears to be no association between the proposed explanatory and dependent variables (i.e., the scatterplot does not indicate any increasing or decreasing trends), then fitting a linear regression model to the data probably will not provide a useful model. A valuable numerical measure of association between two variables is the correlation coefficient, which is a value between -1 and 1 indicating the strength of the association of the observed data for the two variables. A linear regression line has an equation of the form Y = a + bX, where X is the explanatory variable and Y is the dependent variable. The slope of the line is b, and a is the intercept (the value of y when x = 0).
The Multiple Regression Analysis and Forecasting template provides a solid basis for identifying value drivers and forecasting business plan data. While it utilises a range of commonly employed statistical measures to test the validity of the analysis, results are summarized in text for ease of use. Once relationships have been identified, forecasting can be accomplished based on a range of available methodologies. The intuitive step-by-step usage flow enables you to develop strong forecasts for your projects in a timely manner. Download NowLabels: regression Read more! |

The T-test tutorial page provides a good background for understanding ANOVA ("Analysis of Variance"). Like the two-sample t-test, ANOVA lets us test hypotheses about the mean (average) of a dependent variable across different groups.
While the t-test is used to compare the means between two groups, ANOVA is used to compare means between 3 or more groups.
There are several varieties of ANOVA, such as one-factor (or one-way) ANOVA, two-factor (or two-way) ANOVA, and so on, and also repeated measures ANOVA. The factors are the independent variables, each of which must be measured on a categorical scale - that is, levels of the independent variable must define separate groups.
One-Way ANOVA Example One-factor ANOVA, also called one-way ANOVA is used when the study involves 3 or more levels of a single independent variable. For example we might look at average test scores for students exposed to one of three different teaching techniques (three levels of a single independent variable).
ANOVA Statistics The null hypothesis for ANOVA is that the mean (average value of the dependent variable) is the same for all groups. The alternative or research hypothesis is that the average is not the same for all groups.
The ANOVA test procedure produces an F-statistic, which is used to calculate the p-value. As described in the topic on Statistical Data Analysis if p < .05, we reject the null hypothesis. We can then conclude that the average of the dependent variable is not the same for all groups. With ANOVA, if the null hypothesis is rejected, then all we know is that at least 2 groups are different from each other. In order to determine which groups are different from which, post-hoc t-tests are performed using some form of correction (such as the Bonferroni correction) to adjust for an inflated probability of a Type I error. SPSS Anova Statistical Analysis I will use SPSS software to perform the statistical analysis for your dissertation results chapter. This service includes ample email and phone support to ensure that you get all the statistical help you need to fully understand and defend your results.

"Analysis of Variance." A statistical test for heterogeneity of means by analysis of group variances. ANOVA is implemented as ANOVA[data] in the Mathematica package ANOVA`) . To apply the test, assume random sampling of a variate with equal variances, independent errors, and a normal distribution. Let be the number of replicates (sets of identical observations) within each of factor levels (treatment groups), and be the th observation within factor level . Also assume that the ANOVA is "balanced" by restricting to be the same for each factor level. Now define the sum of square terms which are the total, treatment, and error sums of squares. Here, is the mean of observations within factor level , and is the "group" mean (i.e., mean of means). Compute the entries in the following table, obtaining the P-value corresponding to the calculated F-ratio of the mean squared values | (6) | | category | freedom | SS | mean squared | F-ratio | | model | | SSA | | | | error | | SSE | |
| | total | | SST | |
| If the P-value is small, reject the null hypothesis that all means are the same for the different groups.

Abandonment and Desertion in Divorce
Every day miserable people facing divorce all over the world make a decision to stay in the house with their spouse, even though they know both of them would be better off if they separated. They stay for any number of reasons -- to be close to their children, fear of any change, not enough cash to afford another place. Lots of them stay because they're afraid they'll be accused of abandonment -- of desertion. In some cases, their fears are justified. Usually they're not.
In my experience, abandonment and desertion are vastly overrated as issues in divorce. For starters, in most states, the proving of fault has become less significant generally. In most states, incompatibility is the grounds for divorce in the overwhelming majority of cases, and the judge is interested only reluctantly, if at all, in the question of who caused it. Secondly, in most states, a showing of abandonment requires not only that the spouse has left but also that the spouse has tried to keep his or her whereabouts a secret and/or has failed to support the family.
If you're leaving home and are worried about abandonment, I can't give you a blanket authorization, because the laws in each state really do vary as they apply to abandonment. What I can tell you is that, even if you have a problem, that problem will be far less severe if you can show that you've made sure your spouse and your children know how to reach you and that you've continued to provide necessary support for your family. This doesn't mean, of course, that leaving is the right decision. The departure of either parent is nearly always brutally painful for children and spouses alike. Often the right decision is to stay and continue caring for a family in the face of difficulty. My point is that the legal concern about abandonment and desertion is often overblown. AbandonmentAbandonment of defined benefit pension schemes Key points - Abandonment of a pension scheme occurs where the sponsoring employer severs its link with the scheme without providing the scheme with sufficient funds or assets to compensate for losing the ongoing support of its employer.
- This guidance is aimed at trustees and advisers involved in any arrangement that may result in a scheme being abandoned. It is also relevant to employers considering such arrangements.
- Trustees should consider the operation and effect of all employer transactions and should take independent advice before agreeing to any proposed abandonment arrangement.
- Abandonment is not likely to be in the members' best interests where the new sponsoring employer is a nominal employer.
- We encourage early discussion to consider suitable alternatives if trustees believe an arrangement could result in abandonment.
Decommissioning, abandonment and removal off obsolete offshore installationsBelow you will find a brief overview of decommissioning, abandonment and removal off offshore oil and gas installation, including a discussion on secondary use of obsolete structures and reef effects of offshore rigs and platforms. To learn more about Environmental Impact of the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry, click on the links at the end of the page.
Abandonment options The extremely high cost of decommissioning and removal off offshore installations led to the need to revise some of the national and international regulations adopted about 40 years ago. Such a revision covered, in particular, the requirement set by the Convention on the Continental Shelf (Geneva, 1958) and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Montego Bay, 1982) to remove abandoned offshore installations totally. At present, a more flexible and phased approach is used. It suggests immediate and total removal of offshore structures (mainly platforms) weighing up to 4,000 tons in the areas with depths less than 75 m and after 1998 - at depths less than 100 m. In deeper waters, removing only the upper parts from above the sea surface to 55 m deep and leaving the remaining structure in place is allowed. The removed fragments can be either transported to the shore or buried in the sea. This approach considers the possibility of secondary use of abandoned offshore platforms for other purposes. From the technical-economic perspective, the larger the structures are and the deeper they are located, the more appropriate it is to leave them totally or partially intact. In shallow waters, in contrast, total or partial structure removal makes more sense. The fragments can be taken to the shore, buried, or reused for some other purposes. From the fisheries perspective, any options when the structures or their fragments are left on the bottom may cause physical interference with fishing activities. In these cases, the possibility of vessel and gear damages and corresponding losses does not disappear with termination of production activities in the area. Instead, abandoned structures pose the threat to fishing for many decades after the oil and gas operators leave the site. The obsolete pipelines left on the bottom are especially dangerous in this respect. Their degradation and uncontrolled dissipation over wide areas may lead to the most unexpected situations occurring during bottom trawling in the most unexpected places. At the same time, national and international agreements about the decommissioning and abandonment of offshore installations refer mostly to large, fixed structures like drilling platforms. The fate of underwater pipelines is still not affected by clear regulations. Secondary use of offshore fixed platforms The options of reusing abandoned platforms, their foundations, and other structures that are out of service have been actively discussed for the last 10 years. An analysis of scientific potential of research stations permanently based on abandoned oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico revealed several promising directions of marine research at such stations [Dokken, 1993; Gardner, Wiebe, 1993]. These include studying regulation of the marine populations and coral reproduction, making underwater observations, monitoring the sea level, and collecting oceanographic and meteorological information within the framework of international projects. Some other suggestions consider transformation of abandoned platforms into places for power generation using wind/wave and thermal energy [Rowe, 1993]. These platforms also could be used as bases for search and rescue operations or centers for waste processing and disposal [Side, 1992]. From the fisheries perspective, the most interesting projects are the ones aimed at converting the fixed marine structures into artificial reefs. Artificial reefs are known to be one of the most effective means of increasing the bioproductivity of coastal waters by providing additional habitats for marine life. They are widely and effectively used on the shelves of many countries. The offshore structures can undoubtedly attract many species of migrating invertebrates and fish searching for food, shelter, and places to reproduce. In particular, observations in the Gulf of Mexico revealed a strong positive correlation between the amount of oil platforms, growing since the 1950s, and commercial fish catches in the region. It became one of the reasons to suggest the positive impact of offshore oil and gas developments on the fish populations and stock. Wide popularization of this fact led to the mass movement using the slogan "From rigs - to reefs" in the USA in the mid-1980s. However, further analyses of the fishing situation in the Gulf of Mexico showed that the growth of the fish catch in this case was connected not with increasing the total stock and abundance of commercial species but with their redistribution due to the reef effect of the platforms. A critical point here was the use of static gear methods of fishing (e.g., lines and hooks) instead of trawl gears. Besides, the areas around the platforms became very popular places of recreational and sport fishing. This also made a significant contribution to the total catch volumes. Nothing similar was noted in the North Sea, where the number of oil platforms has also been growing since the 1960s. However, the total catch did not correlate with this growth at all and even decreased. This fact indicates the absence of any positive impact of the reef effect of oil platforms on the commercial fish catches in areas where the main way to fish is trawling. At the same time, we should not forget about the danger that abandoned offshore oil platforms and their fragments pose to navigation and trawling fishing. With an abundance of such artificial reefs, this problem requires special regulations for negotiating the inevitable conflict of interests. One such regulatory program has been developed and applied in the USA in the Gulf of Mexico on the shelf of Louisiana [Pope et al., 1993]. It requires mapping the area to indicate the locations of platforms, underwater pipelines, and other structures left on the bottom. The program also includes monitoring, collecting data, developing a warning system, and other activities necessary to control the situation and ensure safety in the region. Explosive activities Complete or partial removal of steel or concrete fixed platforms that weigh thousands of tons is practically impossible without using explosive materials. Bulk explosive charges have been used in 90% of cases. This is very powerful, although short-term, impact on the marine environment and biota, which should not be neglected. It is extremely difficult to get any reliable estimates of possible mortality of marine organisms, especially fish, during an explosive activity even if the initial data, such as the type of explosive, depth of the water, bottom relief, and others, are known. This large uncertainty is connected, in particular, with the high heterogeneity of fish distribution that strongly depends on specific features of fish schooling behavior. Calculations show that with a 2.5-ton (TNT equivalent) charge, the mass of killed fish will be about 20 tons during each explosion. At the same time, if, for example, a school of herring happens to get into that zone, the fish kill figure may be much higher [Side, Davies, 1989]. One of the few known observations of fish damage in zones of explosive activity was done in 1992 in the Gulf of Mexico near the shore of Louisiana and Texas [Gitschlag, Herczeg, 1994]. In order to remove over 100 fixed platforms and other structures, more than 12,000 kg of plastic charges were exploded. The amount of dead fish floating on the surface was visually recorded after the explosions. It totaled to about 51,000 specimens. The actual number of killed fish was undoubtedly higher because many specimens could not float to the surface or did not get in the zone of visual observation. Whatever number of adult fish actually died during the explosions, it will hardly influence the total abundance of commercial species. Much more hazardous for the fish stock are explosive impacts on fish larvae and juveniles. The threshold of lethal impacts for the younger organisms weighing up to several grams is tens of times lower than that for adult specimens [Yelverton et al., 1975; Side, 1992]. Thus, the zone of mortality of fish at the early stages of development is respectively wider. The quantitative estimates of possible effects at the populational level are even more complicated because of the absence of corresponding data and methods. Nevertheless, enough evidence exists to enforce strict regulations of explosive activities and to forbid them in areas and in seasons of spawning and fry development of commercial fish. Removal of the offshore structures also decreases the number of habitats for structure-related fish. For example, in the mostly soft-bottom environment of the Gulf of Mexico, these structures provide hard substrates for marine organisms. The decline of stocks of reef fish observed in this region within the past decade can be connected, in particular, with elimination of over 400 oil-related structures that had served as an artificial habitat for marine life [MMS, 1995].

Now that the academic year is over, it seems that reviewers and editors (including FSP) are getting caught up with their tasks. Yesterday I wrote about some reviews I received. Soon after, I got an email from someone who was reviewing another manuscript of mine.
I hate it when this person reviews my manuscripts because he always writes to tell me that he is doing the review, has some possible problems with my interpretations, suggests that we 'discuss' it, and then he asks me for a favor. Once he asked me to pay for his travel to the U.S. This time he asked me to do some analyses for him. Sometimes I request that this person not review my manuscripts, and I give a vague reason like "conflict of interest", though I didn't do that with this manuscript.
This particular unethical reviewer I've just described is the only one I've encountered who does this. I think it is a rare situation, but it raises the general and more relevant issue of how and whether to suggest that someone not review your manuscript or proposal. Most journals (and NSF) give authors an option of listing "non-preferred reviewers". I don't like to use this option if at all possible. In an ideal world, we are all objective and will focus only on the Science. But back in the real world, there are people who should not review certain (or any) papers/proposals, and sometimes editors and program directors don't know who these people are without some information. If a reason must be given, "conflict of interest" is vague but professional. Somehow I have never felt comfortable writing things like "He harassed my postdoc" or "He asked me for money the last time he reviewed one of my papers".
If I don't have direct experience with someone's giving me an unfair review, I don't list them as a non-preferred reviewer. I would never use a suspicion that someone might be unfair as a reason to request that they not review something of mine. Delusional though it may be, it's best to give someone the benefit of the doubt unless there is evidence to the contrary.
As an editor, when I see non-preferred reviewers listed, sometimes I know the situation and can evaluate whether the list is valid, but in other cases I wonder why. I typically respect the wishes of the authors unless their list is long and includes everyone with any expertise in their subject. In these cases, the list of preferred reviewers is typically loaded with the names of the authors' friends and former co-authors. [memo to authors: Don't do this.]
I am sometimes asked whether it "looks bad" if you list non-preferred reviewers, as if you are afraid of criticism and not confident about the excellence of your paper. The advice I give is basically what I described above: if you have a concrete reason for requesting that someone be excluded from reviewing your work, you should do it. If you just have a suspicion, don't do it.

| How to Select Good Keywords |
|
Selecting keywords and keyword phrases sounds like a simple task but the reality is that choosing the right keywords can be a challenge. There are two main components to selecting good keywords, relevance and popularity. If you select a keyword or phrase that is highly relevant but is never searched on, you will not prosper. Conversely, if a word is incredibly popular but not relevant to your offerings you will not have a good conversion. So, while you might have web traffic, none of the traffic will be targeted. The key to selecting good keywords is striking a balance between relevance and popularity. The more relevant a term to your product or service offering, the more likely the website visitor will convert to a sale. Generic keywords result in lots of impressions (views) but usually result in few click-throughs. More than that, generic keywords do not result in qualified traffic. Unqualified traffic is less likely to convert to a sale. Keep in mind, keywords can vary based on the searchers age, culture, region, education or knowledge. In other words, you need to define your target audience, then select keywords or phrases your target audience would likely use when searching for your product or service. You may need to create multiple keyword groups to target different audiences or demographics. Example: Say you have bird watching software, hobbyist might search "bird watching software" while professionals might search "orthinologist software". If you have both a low end, and a high end version, it might be appropriate to target both audiences. Keyword phrases should be 2-4 words in length. Single words are too general, searchers now rarely search on a single work. Additionally, multi-word phrases are of a higher quality and they are "lightly filtered". According to a OneStat.com survey from February of 2004: 81% of all searches contain more than one word. 19% of searches contain one word 32% of searches contain two words 26% of searches contain three words 13% of searches contain four words 10% of searches contain five words Keywords should be used as a filter attracting visitors who have a a genuine interest in your products or services. 1. Misspellings Optimizing for common word misspellings will increase your audience, the easiest way to capture misspellings without compromising your professional image is to use forums where users are posting, or use actual questions from your customers in a FAQ or an "ask us" column. The questions there are posed in the customer's real words, and may contain the misspellings. 2. Stemming Word stemming is the practice used to capture traffic surrounding a single root word and its derivatives. When searching for keywords make sure to optimize for a word's various forms and word stems. Example: orthinologists and orthinology are word stems. 3. Synonyms Synonyms are different words with similar or identical meanings. The best place to locate synonyms is the thesaurus. Thesaurus - http://thesaurus.reference.com/ 4. Geo Modifiers If you are targeting a specific region you can use geo (geography) modifiers which will use locations to filter your traffic. Example: chicago custom software 5. Purchase Modifiers Studies show that individuals interested in purchasing often will use purchase indicators in their search terms. Enhance your listings by selecting keyword phrases that include purchase modifiers. Example: buy + purchase + compare + shop + 6. Combination Tumbling Be sure to mix and match words and word order to increase your search phrases. Blogs are a great way to build traffic fast and make money on it by writing on a topic you know something about. The easiest way to make money on a blog is to get a free blog at www.Wordpress.com or if you want an adult blog goto www.Thumblogger.com and just add some adsense for your traffic to click on and make some cents. But if you want to know how to earn bigger money from your blog, think about creating niche blogs. Niche money making blogs Before you create a niche blog with niche content, you need a niche! A good idea is to promote high paying affiliate programs like MoreNiche that pay you a nice $100 commission on every sale you make. Combine blogs as an easy way to build traffic, with high paying affiliate networks like MoreNiche and GenBucks, and you will have a nice stream of income very soon if you keep working at it. Create a niche blog by choosing a product or type of products such as weight loss products and write short posts incorporating keywords you know people are searching when looking for info on this type of product or product. You might want to “optimize” each post to include a single keyword or some variations of a single keyword. You can use some free keyword tools to find out what people are searching for at Google’s keyword tool and also Overture’s Keyword Tool. For example you might create a post on “easy weight loss” when promoting MoreNiche’s high paying Proactol product. You could use one of MoreNiche’s 100’s of free content articles and just rewrite content in a post based on that article and insert your niche weight loss keywords in the post such as: easy weight loss quick and easy weight loss fast easy weight loss easy weight loss tips weight loss made easy fast and easy weight loss easy weight loss diets easy weight loss plan easy weight loss plans easy weight loss diet quick easy weight loss easy weight loss for teens easy weight loss program Then just do that over and over again with new base keywords. Also submit your blog to niche directories in your category, get link exchanges with similar sites (tons of people with weight loss sites on the MoreNiche webmaster forum to trade links with) and yes you will get traffic, sales and up to $160 per sale but only if you start right now! | Make Money Blogging |
|
Do you want to make money blogging? If you do - you’re not alone. More and more bloggers are finding that blogging is a profitable medium. Whether it be to earn a few extra dollars a week to feed their coffee habit, or making enough money to stop them having to get a part time job to get through college, or whether they’ve got it to a point where they are able to make a full time living from their blogging - there are tens of thousands of bloggers making money from blogging. In this page I want to share some information for beginners on making money from their blogs. I will start by sharing my own top Money Making Methods (updated regularly) but below that point you to some great resources and teaching on how to increase your income from blogging. What follows is a quick summary of my main income streams from blogging. Before you read it though - keep in mind that every blog is unique in how it can make money. Some of the following income streams will work on some blogs a lot better than others - the key is to experiment with as many as possible and see what works best for you. The following income streams (from a number of blogs) have helped me to earn a six figure income each year for the last three years from blogging. I’ve ranked them from highest to lowest. I hope you find it useful to see the mix and variety of ways that I earn a living from blogging.
Despite not using it here at ProBlogger any more (here’s why) I continue to use AdSense with amazing effect on my other blogs. I have them all set to show image and text based ads and find that 250×300 pixel ads work best (usually with a blended design). I don’t have much luck with their ‘referrals’ program but their normal ads work a treat and continue to be the biggest earner for me. Chitka continues to be a great performer for me on my blogs. They work best on product related blogs although their recent announcement of their Premium ad unit is exciting as they now offer ads with a non product focus that I’m hearing great conversions on (I have one reader who is getting $28 CPM on this ad unit).Chitika offers a range of ad units that I experiment with. I find their eMiniMalls work best and that Related Product Units are also good. Their Shoplincs product isn’t performing as well as it once did for me - mainly because I’ve been promoting it less and have driven less traffic to it. Over the time I’ve been using Chitika they’ve now earned me over a quarter of a million dollars - I can’t recommend them enough! 3. Private Ad Sales/Sponsorships Private ad sales directly to advertisers have continued to grow over the last few months and as a result they’re now my third highest income stream. I expect them to overtake both Chitika and AdSense in the coming months. This includes ad sales of the 125 x 125 ads here at ProBlogger as well as a campaign or two at Digital Photography School. Amazon’s affiliate program has been one of my big movers in the last 12 months. I used to make a few odd dollars from it - however in recent times it has become a significant earner for me (as I’ve shared previously). This quarter it grew even more than previously as a result of continued growth of DPS where I recommend books, software and cameras. 5. Miscellaneous Affiliate Programs I run a variety of affiliate programs on my blogs - most of which bring in smaller amounts of money that don’t really justify a category of their own. These include - - Digital Photography Secrets (a camera technique series), Pro Photo Secrets (a great photoshop product) , Yaro’s Blog Mastermind Mentoring Program (about to open the doors again), SEO Book (Aaron’s legendary resource) and the excellent Teaching Sells course (which just continues to grow in what it offers to it’s members in terms of content). The great thing about many of these programs is that they are of such high quality that they sell themselves and I am being emailed from readers who sign up to them thanking me for the recommendation! As I wrote recently - Shopzilla has really impressed me with how it’s performed over the last few weeks. It’s actually doing well enough to debut in this list at #6. The ads are similar to Chitika but the click values have been higher for me to this point. They don’t offer quite as many options as Chitika does in terms of types of ads but for a new ad network there’s definitely promising signs. I’m looking forward to seeing how they continue to develop! The job boards here at ProBlogger continue to grow each month in the number of advertisements that are being bought. This enabled me to invest most of the money that they’d earned a while back into getting a new back end for the boards and to redesign them. It hit me today that the boards are now bringing in around $1000 a month in revenue which is pretty nice considering that they are so low maintenance to run. They also offer a service to readers and add value to the overall blog. The only problem that I face with the job boards is that there are so many bloggers looking for work that the demand for jobs far exceeds the supply. On the good side of things is that advertisers are reporting getting amazing quality of applications. Another newcomer to this list is WidgetBucks - another ad network that ProBlogger readers will be familiar with. WidgetBucks is similar to Chitika and Shopzilla in many respects and works well on product related sites. It does best on sites with US traffic (the reason I’ve not used it as much as I get a lot of international traffic) so if you have a product related site with a US audience it’d be a no brainer to try out WidgetBucks. I’m hoping they’ll continue to expand their offerings in terms of ad types and visitor location. Disclaimer - WidgetBucks are an advertiser on ProBlogger 9. Miscellaneous Advertising Programs I also play with a number of other ad networks. Some I run as tests to see if I should review them here - and some are just advertising that run in the background on some of my smaller blogs. These include ShoppingAds, Feedburner RSS ads, Vizu (a poll advertising system), Kontera and Bidvertiser. Together these don’t add up to major earnings for me - not because they are not good, but because I don’t use them heavily (a blog can only run so many ads on it). I think that that covers most of it although it’s worth mentioning that last time I did this list I also included TextLinkAds which used to be every bloggers favorite way to make money blogging by selling text links. I’ve stopped using them due to Google cracking down on them (read more about this here) but it’s worth noting that many bloggers still use them successfully - I advise to proceed with caution. Disclaimer - TLA are an advertiser on ProBlogger Useful Resources for Bloggers Wanting to Make Money Blogging A lot has been written on the topic of making money online from blogs. There is a lot of wonderful information out there - but also a lot of hype and sometimes dangerous information. Below are a number of articles that I’ve written exploring some of the different ways that bloggers make money. Labels: get money Read more! |

| Free best Keyword Research Tool |
| Sunday, February 8, 2009 |
Digital Point created a free tool from Overture is a combination tool with the free version of WordTracker. I recommend using the free tools before using WordTracker tool that pay. Digital Point tool can mengestimasi Localized keyword traffic in each State. Keyword Software can be downloaded Usually I do not recommend you download the software tool, but this Good Keyword free and offers some good tools. This software can help you research keywords and can be useful in basic keyword research. chek the keyword competition Many people will see the number of pages that sort of phrase that it is fair enough as estimates for the level of competition. Not the actual number of pages to be used as a reference. Because the reference is only used to find out how many pages that contain the word both in the content or a link pointing directly to their page. Assessment of the competition the better it can be used to search for keyword A keyword BA, at least give some page that contains a certain phrase in it. You can also make use of estimates of competition with the allintitle and allinanchor works as a search. Page has a keyword phrase in the titlenya we can teroptimasi, and have a page in inbound links will have the opportunity to better teroptimasi well. The best way to find out whether the competition level is high enough or not just by looking at the search results. Initially may be a little difficult to read, but if the next will continue to be easy to see how they teroptimasi. Some signs of a competitive marketplace when it is some type of website, the website is more kalem, or website is located high on the top position in the pay per click search engine. We can also roughly estimate the value of the top listings in major search engines for a keyword in the search for top listing using Overture view bid tool and find the frequency of the search through WordTracker. Search Most people need to feel rangking for the amount of time in general and optimistic for the time. Labels: keywords Read more! |

| money quickly from Hot Keywords |
|
I’m a big fan of making free, fast money…no paying to get traffic, not a lot of time invested. Let me share a strategy that I use from time to time. I don’t do it every day, but it only takes a few minutes. So if I have a few spare minutes, I’ll use this to make some money for free, very quickly! I’m assuming that you have a blog with Adsense. (If you don’t, read the Step-by-Step Profit Guide from the menu at the top. It tells you how to setup a free blog and put Adsense on it.) So, how do you get a surge of traffic to your site, spending very little time on it? Three quick steps: - Hot Keywords - go to Google Hot Trends
- Thought Stringing
- Social Bookmarking
Hot Keywords - Go to Google Hot Trends. It shows what people are searching for RIGHT NOW…the top 100 phrases by search volume. (It’s updated every hour or two, and tells when the last update was.) See any words that look interesting to you? See anything that is related to a product? Keep in mind that many of the searches will be of celebrities. But you can find hot news stories, or hot products that are being searched heavily. Something got mentioned on CNN or Oprah and everyone’s checking it. You can click on the keyword phrases Google lists to see what the top news and blog articles are. (Hint: you have almost instant content. Read a few of the articles and restate them in your own words for unique content relevant to a hot topic!)
header tags at the top. (That tells search engines that your page is primarily about this topic.) I restate my conclusion at the bottom, using the phrase again, and surround that statement by bold tags.
Almost there! Now you’ve got good content about a heavily-searched keyword phrase…and a unique phrase that possibly hasn’t appeared on the web before, meaning less competition!
Social Bookmarking Marketing - copy the URL of your specific post (not just the main page of your blog), and head over to SocialMarker, and submit your blog to the major Social Bookmarking sites there.
Even if YOUR page doesn’t get in the top 10 of Google quickly, chances are good that a Propeller page or a Digg or Mixx page will!
It took me longer to type this article than it takes me to enact it. I can literally check Google Hot Trends, find a keyword phrase I like, thought-string it, post about it, and crank it out through Social Marker in about 10 minutes total. FREE! NO COST to me other than that time.
My results from this have varied. I’m not promising that you’ll get rich doing this all day long. BUT, I will say that I’ve had hundreds to thousands of visitors hit my site within 30 minutes of me posting a new post, cranking out the Adsense revenue!! With that volume of visitors, people WILL click some of your ads (assuming you’ve blended them properly, etc.). AND, the cool thing is that somehow these hot topics have a way of re-surging. For example, two weeks after I made one of these ‘quickie’ blog posts, after traffic has gone away (because it wasn’t a hot topic any more), all the sudden a bunch of visitors hit my page again. Some news agency picked up the story in some remote place and re-published it, or it made it into a magazine article that just got delivered or something, and there was another surge. Once you create that post, it NEVER GOES AWAY, and you own that little piece of virtual real estate.
Keep trying. You will have varying results depending on how good you are at thought-stringing, keyword competition, value of the Adsense that appears on your blog, etc. Eventually you will start to ‘fine-tune’ the hot phrases you pick. You will find that some work easier than others. You will start to look for phrase combos that likely haven’t appeared before. For example, if a hot phrase is “Fannie Mae”, because it’s in the news…chances are that there are MILLIONS of pages with almost every conceivable phrase related to Fannie Mae. But a phrase like “Dillon Suicide” (totally fictional, assuming Dillon is a famous actor), probably hasn’t appeared before, and you can thought-string from there to find a common phrase with little competition.
One final thought…if you are lucky, you will find keyword phrases that you can also tie to an affiliate product. As you are examining the keywords, look for product-based phrases (which is tough…most hot topics are people-oriented, like celebrities). Almost any product can be sold through an affiliate. If you belong to some of the affiliate networks, like Commission Junction or LinkShare, then many times you can add links in your blog posts to your affiliate product. Generally affiliate sales pay more than Adsense, which is why I mention this.
Anyway, I hope you understand this method for making free fast money using hot keywords. It works if you work it!

| Business on the Internet that should be realistic & Value |
|
There are a few days ago, after I invited colleagues to peer activities melongok Internet Summit Tung Desem Waringin. Indeed very terrible ... five hundred people attended the 4 million tickets for the price. To learn to get thousands of dollars, rich quickly in a matter of days, and sleeping with another. I also very much what we want to sleep, keep the money in our account. Is that true?
I'm doing on the internet since students (10 years ago), and until now I have a business offline. What is presented by the experts there, I have lalui all. And indeed is correct, such as offline business, what we do will bear fruit. As well as online business, all will bear fruit. But there is enough of a need to emphasis they submit, because it will affect the development of big business on the internet in indonesian.
The emphasis is:
1. So-so make the analogy with the dream that I have indeed felt (ngalir around the archipelago hold money). I have been selling meat ball when running, I just stay around the world money flows;) Business on the internet I fell more painful, because the assumption of virtual mindset not necessarily be business offline. Do not high-high dream ... I was sick later, principles of business on the internet is: "Head above the clouds, feet tread the earth." Tetep But remember, the United States because of the dream, but also tread the earth.
2. Level of success is determined perseverance and focus on work, business investment in the internet is not the money, great software that is used any time ... is your investment. 3. Must master the specifics of what is done (selling ice dawet should know, from what dawet). The use of computers also understand the need, because you started from the success of your own. So I do not correct you can be successful with the "No need to master the computer ...." What happens I enter wrong;) 4. Tung Desem, said business on the internet is one of the farm your money. Correct one and I agree, just ... secanggih any software in use. Google always update in the algoritmanya. Which means that Google update which I can and which can. Do not farm the money until we bann on by Google and the danger of a search engine for our money. Perhaps this is the first to know about the actual philosophy of online business. 5. Online business that will support the sustainability of your business is essential and that is integrated with your own business. What happens when Amazon.com and Google Adsense close cooperation opportunities with you? You will protest to them? 6. Make an online business is valuable, not with the "Rich in the Internet in 10 days" as your motivation. Because if you are in the 10 days is not rich! You will be the core anti-business on the internet, which means ... you will not enjoy success with the smart. 7. Business on the Internet that does not like to eat chili, "Exhausted ... spiciness in the food directly felt." Even if you use sophisticated and expensive tools, but only business on the internet ... not like to eat chili. All have track. 8. If you want to have success online and successful life, have clear vision and mission. Because you will find a quick and measurable steps by yourself. Akan conquer the world in 10 days or 10 years. All of the successful vendor virtual world, Seeing the mission and vision clearly. Not to make money as a primary goal. Sergey Brin & Larry Page do not think Google will benefit them and was like this. Because of their vision and mission clearly! do not worry ... the money will follow you. I already try;) There is one person who I admire India. Name him Wawan ( pogung177.com), not because many of duitnya affiliate or screen shotnya amount gede, or because he profilenya low. But how smart he is to make online business affiliate with the art and ingenuity. That we should learn, because with so ... you will never die on the internet and you will find the way you live on the internet. One thing more important things, said Emha Ainun Najib: People who love the indonesian IM, and this is the result of the IM. Make life not worth, which resulted in the growth culture hedonism, corruption, menghalalkan all ways of life and the selfish. Do not fostered the habit. Pray to remember what we do with the positive and the national anthem Indonesia nyanyi. Will remember us as people of Indonesia, and the struggle for Indonesia Maju. Bon Jovi songs not hold;) .... | how to Generate Money with Website |
|
There are several lists with “ways to make money with a website” on the Internet, but none of them seem to be complete. That is why I decided to create this one. If you know a method that is not listed below, just let us know and we’ll update it.
Notice that ways to make money with a website are different from ways to make more money from it. Methods to increase your traffic or click-through rate will help you make more money, but they do not represent a method of making money per se.
For example, one could suggest that blending AdSense ads with the content is a way to make money from a website. In reality it’s not; it’s just a way to make more money by improving your ad click-through rate. The real monetization method behind it is a PPC ad network.
The list is divided into direct and indirect methods, and examples and links are provided for each point. Enjoy!
Direct Methods 1. PPC Advertising Networks Google AdSense is the most popular option under this category, but there are also others. Basically you need to sign up with the network and paste some code snippets on your website. The network will then serve contextual ads (either text or images) relevant to your website, and you will earn a certain amount of money for every click.
The profitability of PPC advertising depends on the general traffic levels of the website and, most importantly, on the click-through rate (CTR) and cost per click (CPC). The CTR depends on the design of the website. Ads placed abode the fold or blended with content, for instance, tend to get higher CTRs. The CPC, on the other hand, depends on the nice of the website. Mortgages, financial products and college education are examples of profitable niches (clicks worth a couple of dollars are not rare), while tech-related topics tend to receive a smaller CPC (sometimes as low as a couple of cents per click). The source of the traffic can also affect the overall CTR rate. Organic traffic (the one that comes from search engines) tends to perform well because these visitors were already looking for something, and they tend to click on ads more often. Social media traffic, on the other hand, presents terribly low CTRs because these visitors are tech-savvy and they just ignore ads. List of popular CPC advertising networks: 2. CPM Advertising Networks CPM advertising networks behave pretty much as PPC networks, except that you get paid according to the number of impressions (i.e., page views) that the ads displayed on your site will generate. CPM stands for Cost per Mille, and it refers to the cost for 1,000 impressions. A blog that generates 100,000 page views monthly displaying an advertising banner with a $1 CPM, therefore, will earn $100 monthly. CPM rates vary with the network, the position of the ad and the format. The better the network, the higher the CPM rate (because they have access to more advertisers). The closer you put the ad to the top of the page, the higher the CPM. The bigger the format (in terms of pixels), the higher the CPM. You can get as low as $0,10 and as high as $10 per 1,000 impressions (more in some special cases). CPM advertising tends to work well on websites with a high page views per visitor ratio (e.g., online forums, magazines and so on). List of popular CPM advertising networks: 3. Direct Banner Advertising Selling your own advertising space is one of the most lucrative monetization methods. First and foremost because it enables you to cut out the middleman commissions and to determine your own rates. The most popular banner formats on the web are the 728×90 leaderboard, the 120×600 skyscraper, the 300×250 rectangle and the 125×125 button. The downside of direct banner advertising is that you need to have a big audience to get qualified advertisers, and you will need to spend time managing the sales process, the banners and the payments. Related links: 4. Text Link Ads After Google declared that sites selling text links without the nofollow tag would be penalized, this monetization method became less popular. Many website owners are still using text links to monetize their sites, though, some using the nofollow tag and some not. The advantage of this method is that it is not intrusive. One can sell text links directly through his website or use specialized networks like Text-Link-Ads and Text-Link-Brokers to automate the process. Text link marketplaces and networks: 5. Affiliate Marketing Affiliate marketing is a very popular practice on the Internet. Under this system you have a merchant that is willing to let other people (the affiliates) sell directly or indirectly its products and services, in exchange for a commission. Sometimes this type of advertising is also called CPA (cost per action) or CPL (cost per lead) based. Affiliates can send potential customers to the merchant using several tools, from banners to text links and product reviews. In order to find suitable affiliate programs you can turn to individual companies and publishers like Dreamhost and SEOBook, or join affiliate marketplaces and networks. List of popular affiliate marketplaces and networks: 6. Monetization Widgets The latest trend on the web are widgets that let you monetize your website. Examples include Widgetbucks and SmartLinks. Some of these services operate under a PPC scheme, others behave like text link ads, others yet leverage affiliate links. Their main differentiator, however, is the fact that they work as web widgets, making it easier for the user to plug and play the service on its website. List of companies that provide monetization widgets: 7. Sponsored Reviews PayPerPost pioneered this model, with much controversy on the beginning (related to the fact that they did not require disclosure on paid posts). Soon other companies followed, most notably Sponsored Reviews and ReviewMe, refining the process and expanding the paid blogging model. Joining one of these sponsored reviews marketplaces will give you the opportunity to write sponsored posts on a wide range of topics. Not all bloggers are willing to get paid to write about a specific product or website (because it might compromise the editorial credibility), but the ones who do are making good money out of it. If your blog has a big audience you could also offer sponsored reviews directly, cutting off the commissions of the middleman. List of sponsored reviews and paid blogging networks: 8. RSS Feed Ads With the quick adoption of the RSS technology by millions of Internet users, website owners are starting to find ways to monetize this new content distribution channel. Feedburber already has its own publisher network, and you can sign-up to start displaying CPM based advertising on your feed footer. Bidvertiser recently introduced a RSS feed ad option as well, with a PPC scheme. Finally, some blogs are also opting to sell banners or sponsored messages on their feed directly. John Chow and Marketing Pilgrim are two examples. Related links: 9. Sponsors for Single Columns or Events If you website has specific columns or events (e.g., a weekly podcast, an interview series, a monthly survey, a special project) you could find companies to sponsor them individually. This method increases the monetization options for website owner, while giving advertisers the possibility to target a more specific audience and with a reduced commitment. Mashable illustrates the case well. They have several advertising options on the site, including the possibility to sponsor specific columns and articles, including the “Daily Poll” and the “Web 2.0 Invites.” Problogger also runs group writing projects occasionally, and before proceeding he publicly announce the project asking for sponsors. 10.Premium Content Some websites and blogs give away part of their content for free, and charge for access to the premium content and exclusive tools. SEOMoz is a good example. They have a very popular blog that gives advice and information on wide range of SEO related topics. On top of that visitors can decide to become premium members. It costs $48 monthly and it grants them access to guides, tools and other exclusive material. 11. Private Forums While the Internet is populated with free forums, there is also the possibility to create a private one where members need to pay a single or recurring fee to join.
SEO Blackhat charges $100 monthly from its members, and they have thousands of them. Obviously in order to charge such a price for a forum membership you need to provide real value for the members (e.g., secret techniques, tools, and so on). Performancing also launched a private forum recently, focused on the networking aspect. It is called The Hive, and the monthly cost is $10. These are just two examples. There are many possibilities to create a private and profitable forum, you just need to find an appealing angle that will make it worth for the members. List of popular forum software: 12. Job Boards All the popular blogs are trying to leverage job boards to make some extra income. Guy Kawasaki, ReadWriteWeb, Problogger… you name it. Needless to say that in order to create an active and profitable job board you need first to have a blog focused on a specific niche, and a decent amount traffic. The advantage of this method is that it is passive. Once you have the structure in place, the job listings will come naturally, and you can charge anywhere from $10 up to $100 for each. List of popular job board software: 13. Marketplaces Sitepoint is the online marketplace by excellence. Some websites and blogs, however, are trying to replicate that model on a smaller scale. Depending on your niche, a market place that allows your visitors to buy, sell and trade products could work well. Over the time you could start charging a small fee for new product listings. The problem with this method is that there are no standard software on the web, so you would need to hire a coder to get a marketplace integrated into your website. You can see an example of a marketplaces being used on EasyWordpress and on Mashable. 14. Paid Surveys and Polls There are services that will pay you money to run a small survey or poll on your website. The most popular one is called Vizu Answers. Basically you need to sign up with them, and select the kind of polls that you want to run your site. Most of these services operate under a CPM model. 15. Selling or Renting Internal Pages Million Dollar Wiki made this concept popular, but it was being used on the web for a long time around (check Pagerank10.co.uk for instance). These websites sell for a single fee or rent for a recurring fee internal pages on their domain. Usually they have either high Pagerak or high traffic, so that people purchasing a page will be able to benefit in some way. Implementing this method on a small blog would be difficult, but the concept is interesting and could be explored further. 16. Highlighted Posts from Sponsors Techmeme probably pioneered this idea, but somehow it has not spread to other websites. The tech news aggregator displays editorial posts on the left column, and on the sidebar they have a section titled “Techmeme Sponsor Posts.” On that section posts from the blog of the advertisers get highlighted, sending qualified traffic their way. Considering that the monthly cost for one spot is $5000 and that they have around 6 sponsors at any given time, it must be working well. 17. Donations Placing a “Donate” link or button on a website can be an efficient way to earn money, especially if your blog is on a niche where readers learn and gain value from your content. Personal development and productivity blogs, for instance, tend to perform well with donation based systems (one good example being Steve Pavlina). A small variation of this method appeared sometime ago with the Buy Me a Beer plugin. This WordPress plugin enables you to insert a customized message at the bottom of each article, asking the readers to chip in for a beer or coffee. 18. In-text Adverting In-text adverting networks like Kontera and Vibrant Media will place sponsored links inside your text. These links come with a double underline to differentiate them from normal links, and once the user rolls the mouse over the link the advertising will pop. Should the user click on it the site owner will make some money. Some people make good money with this method, but others refrain from using it due to its intrusiveness. It is also interesting to note that very few mainstream websites have experimented with in-text advertising. 19. Pop-ups and Pop-unders Pop-ups are a common yet annoying form of advertising on the Internet. If you are just trying to make a much money as possible from your website, you could experiment with them. If you are trying to grow the traffic and generate loyal visitors, however, you probably should stay away from them. Just consider the hundreds of pop-up blockers out there: there is a reason why they are so popular. Ad networks that use pop-ups: 20. Audio Ads Also called PPP (Pay Per Play), this advertising method was introduce by Net Audio Ads. the concept is pretty simple: play a small audio advertising (usually 5 seconds) every time a visitor enters into your website. The user should not be able to stop it, creating a 100% conversion rate based on unique visitors. The company is still rolling tests, but some users are reporting to get from a $4 to a $6 CPM. Regardless of the pay rate, though, this is a very intrusive form of advertising, so think twice before using it. 21. Selling the Website Selling your website could be your last resource, but it has the potential to generate a big sum of money in a short period of time. Market places on online forums like DigitalPoint and Sitepoint are always active with website buyers and sellers. Keep in mind that they most used parameter to determine the value of a website is the monthly revenue that it generates, multiplied by a certain number (the multiplier can be anything from 5 to 30, depending on the expectations of the seller, on the quality of the site, on the niche and other factors). Some people also make money trading and flipping websites. They either create them from scratch or buy existing ones, and after some revamping they sell them for a profit. Related links: Indirect Methods 22. Selling an Ebook Perhaps one of the oldest money making strategies on the web, using a website to promote a related ebook is a very efficient way to generate revenue. You could either structure the website around the book itself, like SEOBook.com, or launch the ebook based on the success of the website, like FreelanceSwitch did we the book How to be a Rockstar Freelancer. Related links: 23. Selling a Hardcover Book Many authors and journalists leverage their blogs or websites to sell copies of hardcover books. Examples include Guy Kawasaki, Seth Godin and Malcolm Gladwell. While most of these people were already renowned authors before they created their website, one could also follow the other way around. Lorelle VanFossen did exactly that with her Blogging Tips book. First she built her authority on the subject via her blog, and afterwards she published the book. List of self publishing and publishing services: 24. Selling Templates or WordPress Themes As more and more people decide to get an online presence, website templates and WordPress themes become hotter and hotter. On this segment you have mainstream websites like TemplateMonster, as well as individual designers who decide to promote and sell their work independently. Brian Gardner and Unique Blog Designs are two examples of websites that make money with the sales of premium and custom WordPress themes. 25. Offering Consulting and Related Services Depending on your niche, you could make money by offering consulting and related services. If you are also the author of your blog, the articles and information that you will share will build your profile and possibly certify your expertise on that niche, making it easier to gain customers. Chris Garrett used a similar strategy. First he created a highly influential blog on the blogging and new media niche, and afterwards he started offering consulting services to clients with related problems and needs. 26. Creating an Email List or Newsletter Email lists and newsletters represent one of the most powerful marketing and money making tools on the Internet. They offer incredible conversion rates, and the possibility to call people to action in a very efficient way. Creating a big list is a difficult task though, so if you have a popular website you could leverage it to increase the number of subscribers on your list. Yaro Starak is a famous Internet marketer, and if you visit his blog you will notice that right on top he has a section encouraging visitors to subscribe to his email newsletter. Yaro generates five figures in revenues each month from his email newsletters, proving that this method works. List of software to manage email newsletters: 27. Mentoring programs People are willing to pay for someone or something that will teach them and give them knowledge (as opposed to mere information). Education is one of the biggest industries in the world, and the online landscape behaves in a similar way. Creating a mentoring program related to the niche of your website could be very profitable if you manage to structure and promote it adequately. There is a wide range of media and tools that you can use to deliver the information, from text articles to audio and video lessons. Brian Clark leveraged the success of Copyblogger to launch a mentoring program teaching people how to build membership and how to sell content online. The program is titled Teaching Sells, and it costs $97 monthly. Sounds expensive, but they have over 1,000 members. 28. Creating a conference around the website If your website takes off and becomes an authority on its niche, you could create a conference around it. Depending on the size of your audience, the event could attract thousands of people, and you could make money directly from conference passes and sponsors. Search Engine Land, for instance, created a series of conferences that visit several cities on the United States and on other countries as well. The conferences are called Search Marketing Expo, and the tickets and passes cost thousands of dollars. Labels: get money Read more! |
